June is National Dengue Awareness Month; this aims to heighten the awareness on the effects of the dengue-carrying mosquitoes, how to prevent one from acquiring the disease, and ways to maintain a dengue-free environment.

According to DOH (LINK: https://www.dilg.gov.ph/events/National-Dengue-Awareness-Month/578), dengue is considered as a year-round disease that could affect anyone at any time of the day. More importantly, the cases recorded an all-time high during rainy season due to the presence of more breeding places benefited by “aedes aegypti” or the dengue-causing mosquitoes. Although it is declared as a disease that could strike anyone anytime, this month serves as a reminder for us to be more cautious when it comes to this deadly disease.

Since the rainy season is approaching, now is the best time to observe preventive measures to make your home dengue-free! Here are 5 ways that you could follow:

Clean the corners of your house once every week

Make time for cleaning unseen corners of your house. Maintaining cleanliness and proper hygiene are two of the main steps to combat this deadly disease. Most of the time, those areas that aren’t frequently seen in our houses are the most prone to be breeding grounds for these dengue-causing mosquitoes.

Also, check the damp areas in your home. Examine the bottom part of your refrigerator, sink, cooler, racks, dish basins, and even toilet bowls.

Don’t leave an empty container with stagnant water

Watch out for commonly used containers inside the house like planter dishes, and flower vases as they could be a potential host for mosquito eggs. Dengue-causing mosquitoes are most likely to lay their eggs in stagnant water. So, the best way to stop these mosquitoes from breeding is to avoid these containers to hold standing water for too long. Change them very frequently, or better yet, avoid placing them in corners where there isn’t too much light.

Avoid leaving junk inside and outside the house like flat tires, and empty containers. Cover your trash bins properly and make sure to never let them accumulate inside your house.

Drain and clean your gutters

This also applies the same for swimming pools, bathtubs, and fountains.

Cover your windows and doors with net screens

This is one of the best alternative measures that you should keep an eye on, especially during the rainy season where mosquitoes start to breed. Use net screens to cover the areas that are open most of the time like the bedroom windows, and doors.

Use mosquito repellent as frequent  as possible

Make sure to apply mosquito repellent lotions day in and day out. Most of these products include N-Diethyl-3-Methylbenzamide (DEET) which is one of the most effective ingredients found in lotions that help repel dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

You can also protect your family’s health by using mosquito-repellent sprays. On the other hand, you can try to use pesticides on the dark spaces or corners of your house where mosquitoes are most likely to thrive.

Now that rainy days are coming, the best way to avoid this deadly disease is to be proactive when it comes to cleaning, checking, and disposing stuff. Keep your family safe and healthy by keeping your home clean and dengue-free!

In the meantime, choose a home that has wide living spaces which allows you to decide where you put your things. That way, you could ensure that all corners are kept clean and well-maintained.
