As the pandemic continues and people are forced to stay at home, most of us do almost anything within the comforts of our abode. Some feel comfortable working in bed, some spend hours on their desk talking with their clients virtually, while others are entai ed to report to their respective offices, and the list goes on.
With everything shifting to the “new normal,” doing everything at home is becoming a norm, especially now that businesses and companies are also revising protocols that they implement amongst their workforce.
THE IDEA OF INDEPENDENCE
In the Philippines, it’s normal to stay at your parents’ house until you’re financially stable or you’re ready to embark on the next chapter of your life. But as convenient and practical as it sounds, there are several downsides to this co-dependence. The first is setting boundaries; the second is not getting all the space you need.
While the idea of independence sounds fun and exciting, it’s not always achieved in a snap of a finger. When you’re a Filipino millennial still trying to figure out the world and what you want to do with your life, staying with your parents would be the easiest and safest way to go. However, until you’re financially stable and confident that you’re holistically prepared to move out, there are specific issues that may arise while sharing a place with a lot of people, even if they’re you’re family, which could also interfere with your idea of independence. Let’s jot down some of them.
NOT GETTING THE SPACE YOU NEED
Staying with other people under one roof has its perks:
-
It’s a practical route if you’re still saving up for your dream home.
-
You get to socialize with them.
-
You sometimes get a free pass on chores, if not, tasks are delegated, and you don’t have to do all of it alone. But sharing a house with someone also has its downsides.
-
You are not getting the space that you need for yourself.
If your problem is that you feel restricted to do what you want because you’re afraid you might disturb your housemates at some point or if it’s the other way around, then that’s one sign you should take the next step and get your own place. Especially if you’re working from home and your job requires a quiet working environment to perform your duties. It’s tricky when you don’t necessarily control what the people around you do; it’s distracting and limiting you from doing the things you need to do.
SETTING BOUNDARIES
It’s easy to get too comfortable if you’re living with someone for a long time. But, unfortunately, this often results in your boundaries being crossed or the other person not abiding by them at all. To some, this is fine as long as both parties are okay with it, but it becomes a problem when you’re starting to feel that compromising your non-negotiables is not worth it.
Getting your own space allows you to live by your means, without limits, and without thinking about somebody else. However, you have it plan it out thoroughly to avoid mishaps and regrets.
FEELING STUCK
When people get too comfortable with co-dependence, they tend to feel stuck. If that’s you and you feel like you need a space to grow, then go ahead and consider moving out. After all, moving out is not necessarily a bad thing. If you think it will improve your quality of life and you’re capable of doing so, then go ahead and do it for the better.
IN DIRE NEED OF A CHANGE
This is related to the previous reason, but everyone needs to change every once in a while. It allows us to develop additional skills, meet new people, discover new things about the world and ourselves, and grow as we go along. These are crucial in building your character and mindset, which will be your foundation as you enter your 30s.
