5 DIY Projects for First-time Homeowners

On a tight budget but want to spice up your personal space with new furniture pieces? Opt for an alternative and try out DIY projects you can enjoy this quarantine! Check out the following DIY stuff you can do to help you achieve your desired home decor!

Wooden Headboard

SOURCE: Homedit

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4 blocks 3cm x 200cm Pine Wood (you may cut it according to the width of your bed), these will serve as the body of the headboard

  • 2 blocks 3cm x 100cm Pine Wood, will serve as the support

  • Varnish or paint

  • Hand drill

  • Screws

What you need to do:

  1. Prepare a plastic wrap or newspaper on the floor before starting. This is to minimize the mess when you paint or varnish the 4 3x200 pine wood, which will serve the body of the headboard.

  2. Whichever you prefer, varnish or paint the front side of the woods. Let it dry.

  3. Once dried, put it all together by using screws.  Attach the 2 3x100 pinewood vertically so it could hold all the blocks of wood that will serve as the body.

  4. Place it in your bed and hang some fairy lights for more dreamy nights.

  • Paintbrush

  • Watercolors

  • Packing tape

What you need to do:

  2. Start assembling the sides to the bottom piece using packing tape. Make sure to always put the flap on the insides.

  3. Keep assembling the pieces side by side, until you finish your box.

  4. Wrap your handmade box with the rope. Start from the bottom left corner by gluing and twisting it all the way to the top.

Tip: You may add a white cloth at the top for a better look.

  1. You may also decorate your new hamper by painting its bottom part with an ombre look.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Rug or an old cloth

  • Sandpaper

  • Paint or varnish

  • Paint roller and brush

  • Hand drill

  • New cabinet handle

What you need to do:

  1. Clean the inside and outside of your kitchen cabinets. Make sure that it is free from dirt and dust before you start upgrading it.

  2. Remove its old finish by using sandpaper.

  3. Paint it with your desired color or varnish it if you want to retain its natural color.

Tip: A lighter color on top cabinets makes ceilings look taller. Also, painting the insides with white could bring in more light.

  1. Change your cabinet handles with new ones. There are different designs and sizes that are made available in the market and could match your preference.

Vertical Garden

SOURCE: The Crafty Gentlemen

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Thick picture frame (back and glass panel removed)

  • 4 pieces 2x2 wood

  • Hand drill

  • Screws

  • Staplegun

  • Wire mesh

  • Plywood (fits the dimension of the box)

  • Succulent potting soil

  • Succulent cuttings

  • Hooks or wire (for hanging)

What you need to do:

  1. Cut the wire mesh to fit inside the frame opening.

  2. Insert the mesh by stapling it to the inside edges of the frame. Stretch it as you go so it is taut and nice.

  3. Now, construct the shadow box on the back of the frame to create a space for the soil and plants. Cut the woods according to the dimensions of the frame and attach it to the frame using screws.

  4. Cut the plywood to the size of the shadow box. Once done, nail it to the shadowbox.

  5. Pour soil on top of the wire mesh and shake the frame from time to time to evenly disperse the soil. Add more soil until it fills the shadow box.

  6. Separate the succulent into small clumps and place them through the wire mesh. You may cut and bend the wire squares but be careful not to cut too much so that your wire grid won’t fall apart.

  7. Attach hooks or wire to the back of the frame, hang it up in your living room or your bedroom where there is enough sunlight and air.
